It's Halloween!!!

Here is Fergus with his friend Chattan, the black cat.  (Chattan comes from the Gaelic word for cat).

Halloween originated with a Celtic harvest festival called Samhain (pronounced SOW-en).  The Celts believed that this night was when the 'door' between the human world and spirit world was open, and  good or evil sprits could enter their world.  They lit bonfires and may have dressed in disguises so the evil spirits would not recognize them.

In Scotland, turnips were carved with faces instead of pumpkins.  The Celts carried home the embers from the communal Samhain bonfire using the carved turnip lanterns.
